Layer-by-layer polyelectrolyt coatings
The extracellular matrix (ECM) is build up by several makro-molecules like fibrous proteines or proteoglycanes. Most cells would initiate apoptosis if they are not in contact with ECM or other cells. A basic requirement to biomaterials or their surfaces is to interact with cells in a way like ECM does. To modify surfaces by applying specific coatings, the layer-by-layer method is very common and easy to perform.
During this project different coatings were evaluated while human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC's) served as experimental cell culture.
